In the washbasin area of our detached guest room, we have chosen to use Shigaraki ware—a traditional Japanese ceramic with over 1,300 years of history. Shigaraki ware (Shigarakiyaki), originating from Shigaraki Town in Shiga Prefecture, is one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns and is renowned for its rustic texture, natural ash glazes, and warm, earthy tones. Each piece is shaped by fire and chance, embodying the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi—the beauty of imperfection and transience.

By incorporating Shigaraki pottery into the washbasin, we hope to offer guests not only functionality but also a quiet moment of cultural reflection. The tactile quality of the clay, the subtle variations in glaze, and the connection to centuries of craftsmanship make this more than just a basin—it’s a small encounter with Japanese heritage.
