From morning prayers to garden walks, from calligraphy to quiet contemplation, every experience at Fudoin is an invitation to deepen your awareness. Let the rhythm of temple life guide you toward inner stillness.
At our temple, you are invited to experience the spiritual practices of Shingon Esoteric Buddhism, including Ajikan meditation, a quiet and profound form of Zen; Shakyo, the mindful copying of sacred sutras; Morning Service (Gongyo), a ritual of devotion; and Shojin Ryori, traditional Buddhist vegetarian cuisine regarded as a form of training.
Morning Service(Gongyo)
Each morning at dawn, we offer prayers for the peaceful repose of ancestors enshrined at our temple, and for harmony and well-being in society.
Sutra Copying (Shakyo)
In a tranquil setting, you are invited to copy the 262 characters of the Heart Sutra with mindful intention.
This quiet practice offers a sense of peace and reflection.
(Please let us know at check-in if you wish to participate.)
Ajikan Meditation (Shingon Zen)
Embark on a journey of self-discovery through Ajikan, a meditative practice rooted in Shingon Zen.
This profound experience invites you to reflect on the question: Who am I?
(Please note that availability may vary depending on temple events.)
Note: Ajikan is a meditative practice of Shingon Esoteric Buddhism, passed down by Kobo Daishi (Kukai). Through silent contemplation, practitioners reflect on the self, sense the presence of the Buddha, and realize the profound truth that “the self and the universe are one.”
The Sanskrit syllable “A” is considered the first letter of the sacred language and symbolizes the principle of non-arising and non-ceasing—the eternal nature of all things.
Unlike Zen meditation, which often involves sitting quietly facing a wall, Shingon meditation is performed in front of a hanging scroll depicting the syllable “A” and a full moon, which serve as sacred visual anchors.
Currently, overnight guests may join a mini Ajikan experience during the morning service.
